Jonah’s Dr. Seuss Birthday Party!

For Jonah’s first birthday party, I knew I wanted a Dr. Seuss theme. His nursery is done all in Dr. Seuss, and we had a couple of Dr. Seuss baby showers, so I thought it was a great way to round out the year. Plus, I had a lot of stuff on hand already, which was nice!

I didn’t want to go overboard with food or decorations, so I tried to keep it simple as I planned everything out and searched Pinterest and Etsy. I’m fairly crafty, so I was able to do some things myself, but I also left the bigger things to the professionals (everyone should have my sister make their cupcakes/cakes, just saying).

We decided to have the party at our house because it was easy, and Jonah could nap right up to the minute the party started. This kid took a three hour nap while everyone decorated, so that was a HUGE score.

I know a lot of first birthday parties are extremely over the top, and I was tempted to buy all the things as I searched for inspiration, but I tried to remember that this party was for Jonah, not for me (though it was definitely a celebration of David and I making it a full year as parents!).

We had such a fun day, and everything turned out really cute (though I am not a great photographer, so these photos are less than stellar). Also, big plus: It was calling for rain ALL DAY and it didn’t start raining until the party ended! Since the majority of the party was outside, this was a big win in my book!

Jonah got lots of fun new toys and some seriously cute new clothes, and he had a lot of fun trying cake for the first time! Okay, on to the photos!

The Decorations:

I love how well this turned out. Thank goodness for Etsy when I’m not confident in my abilities. A coworker also mounted this on foam core for us so we didn’t have to buy an expensive frame!

These balloons were the perfect way to greet out-of-town guests so everyone knew they were at the right house!

I found these little Dr. Seuss dry erase boards in the Dollar Spot at Target. I just made a hole in the top and added ribbon for the perfect door hanger!

I found this blue striped banner in the Clearance section at Target. My mom just added some Dr. Seuss stickers (Target Dollar Spot) to each pennant, and the banner was immediately on theme!

I made this monthly photo banner myself, and I am so happy with how it turned out!

The Food:

We kept the food inside since it was such a hot day. Not pictured are the Little Caesar’s pizzas we also had (but they didn’t have a cute theme!).

This yummy cake batter dip was a hit! It tasted like Dunkaroos!

This was such an easy food choice and was a hit with all the kids!

My mother-in-law made these for one of my showers, and I knew we had to have them again! Pretzels, white chocolate, and a green m&m; what could be simpler?

My sister made these delicious red velvet cupcakes into the shape of the Cat in the Hat’s hat, and it was easily my favorite part of the decor!

This cake topper also came from Etsy, and it was the perfect addition to Jonah’s smash cake!

Looking back, there are a lot of things I forgot to get pictures of, but these show you a lot of what we did and hopefully you can get some inspiration from this post! We also used Dr. Seuss books as decorations on our screened in porch, and we had a signing station where party goers could sign Jonah’s copy of The Cat in the Hat.

We also had a super cute and fun photo booth with fun Dr. Seuss-themed props, but none of my photo booth pictures will upload, for some reason. Whomp, whomp. We also had a pretty serious Ladder Ball competition going on in the yard, but those participating were having too much fun to take photos! 😉

What did you do for your child’s first birthday party? Are you a DIY-er or, like me, do you do a mix of DIY and “just let the professionals do what they do best?” I’d love to hear from you!
